Started by John Athanasopoulos as Olde Salem Brewery in 1995 at 278 Derby Street across from his other business, Brother's Deli.

He sold the business to Joe and Steve Slesar of Boston Beer Works in 1996. They already owned a restaurant in Boston near Fenway Park.

It was renamed after the sale, to Salem Beer Works. Run by Boston Beer works, the pandemic took its toll and they closed all their locations in 2021.

The Salem restaurant closed in 2021. It is now the location of "Bit Bar", which moved from the location in the shuttered Salem Jail on St. Peter Street.
