- Joseph B. Harrington (1908-1964) started a family political dynasty with his election in 1937 to Salem City Council.
- He was on city council from 1938-1941 then State Senate from 1941-42, then State House of Representatives from 1944-46, then
mayor of Salem 1948-49. Joe had an indefinable Irish charm and was a gifted public speaker. He was class valedictorian in high school.
After putting himself through law school he became a judge.
