Mary Jane Lee was a housewife and activist. Originally from Peabody, the Lee family moved to the Point section of Salem in 1986. Mary Jane was soon elected to the Salem Harbor Community Development Corporation (SHCDC). She was driven to address the growing problem of homelessness on the North Shore.

Some of the organizations she was involved with over the years were: Citizens for Adequate Housing, the Inn Between, Peabody Housing Authority, Community Land Trust.

Lee chaired the Point Neighborhood Action Group started by the Salem Community Alliance. She also personally oversaw the development of Drop-A-Dime, and anonymous anti-drug tip hotline.

Mary Jane Lee died suddenly in June of 1991.

After her death the local park at was renamed Mary Jane Lee Park.
