Salem was poised to be active in the California Gold Rush with so many ships in the harbor waiting to be
involved in this exciting new event.
A long article in the E.I.H.C., called "On the early days and rapid growth of California" addresses some of these Salem connections,
including the role Capt. John Bertram played in it.
