The Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) visited Salem Oct. 29, 1784 and was entertained at the Assembly Hall at 138 Federal St. He again visited Salem on August 31, 1824 and was accorded a great reception. He dined at Hamilton Hall with 300 guests and visited Judge Story at 26 Winter Street. During his visit he passed by the elaborate arch that erected at the head of Winter Street.
