Droll Designs was a pottery business started by two artists, Jan Weinshanker and Jean Townsend in about

1990. They were selling painted furniture and were encouraged to try painted pottery pieces.

Townsend has a undergraduate degree in ceramics and a master's degree in painting from Pratt University in NYC.

Weinshanker has a fine arts degree from Syracuse University.

Ten years later they had 48 employees in a converted factory on Grove Street. The company did exceptionally well,

changing the line twice a year. Some Droll images are cats and dogs, fruits and vegetables, flowers, stripes and dots.

The colors are bold and the mix of colors unusual.

Today, the Droll Designs runs out of Marblehead and the two founders are not longer with the company.
