The Explorers' Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI), founded in 1992 at Salem State College, is a one of over 300 such organizations in the U.S. and Canada affiliated with Elderhostel. Members join in active peer learning to share their knowledge and experience in courses that range from lectures and discussions to hands-on workshops and field trips.
The courses vary in length from a day to a semester. There are no admission requirements, examinations, grades or credits for the course, which are mostly taught by retired teachers. There is a membership fee. Members receive access to Salem State College's Library and Sports Center and reduced admission to many cultural events on campus, the Explorers newsletter, "The Compass."
