In 1684 a jail in which the persons accused of witchcraft in 1692 were confined, was built at 2 Federal St, on the corner of St. Peter Street. In 1763, that jail was succeeded by a new one, on the site of what is now 4 Federal Street. When the new stone jail was built in 1813, this building was remodeled into a dwelling house. It is said that some timbers of the jail of 1692 were used in the construction of the jail in 1763, according to the Visitor's Guide (1953 ed.) File:OldWitchJail
