Ernest attended MIT and studied architecture before entering that profession. He was successful; he designed a number of private houses and public buildings in the Boston area, especially the North Shore,

as well as buildings in New Haven, CT, and Ottawa, Canada, where his older brother Joe was the general manager of the American Bank Note Co.

He drowned in a tragic accident when the canoe that he and his nephew Maurice M. Osborne were paddling capsized. His nephew Maurice was rescued but Ernest drowned probably due to his heavy clothing

and the fact that one of his arms was very weak due to a recently healed break.

He designed the Blake Memorial Chapel at Harmony Grove Cemetery and he and his family are buried there. He designed their grave markers as well.

The Machado family lived a 5 Carpenter Street for many years.
