Lewis Hine (1874-1940) documented child labor in the United States for the National Child Labor Committee starting in 1908. Some of his photographs show Salem children at various jobs, including the shoe factories so prevalent in town then

In the fall of 1911, Hine was in New England and documented the industrial workplaces in Boston, Lowell, New Bedford, Lawrence and Salem. These can be found in the Library of Congress website.
