In 1979, the country singer Johnny Cash came to Salem in search of his roots. He believed he was a descendant of William Cash of Salem.

According to the Salem News article, he visited the Essex Institute and then went looking for his ancestor's house.

The librarian told him that William Cash (who was a ship master) bought the house in 1667 but it is no longer standing.

He visited the site of the old house and talked to a neighbor at 9 Essex Street.
