Custom House

The Custom House, built in 1818, is well known for its ties to Nathaniel Hawthorne. He worked there when he lived in Salem.
The previous custom house was on Central Street before moving to Derby Wharf in 1819.
Salem artisan Joseph True carved the Custom House eagle in 1825. In 2003, the eagle was taken down, replaced temporarily with a replica while the other was restored over a three year period.
