Robert Maier, 64, a long-time Salem resident, retired as Director of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners on March 15, 2013. He was a library professional for four decades and director of the board since 2002. Maier's mission, with the board was to build a strong statewide system of shared library services and increased library use.

He sees a rebirth of focus on community programming in public libraries, with programs for adults as well as children. The Boston Globe published an interview with Maier called "Libraries evolve with the times" in their March 24th, 2013 edition.
