After seeing a self-service car wash in Texas, Harold Andrews, who had just graduated from college, started one on North Street

in Salem. In July 1964, he built a six-bay car wash, next to a "Burger Chef".

Over the years, the wash has been upgraded. In 1978, the original sheet metal building was torn down and replaced with 10 bays of block and brick.

They also remodeled the former Berger Chef building into the HMA Car Care Office.

Four more bays were added in 1982 and 1985, bringing the total to 13.

Several years ago, in approximately 2019, HMA moved the business to 57 Grove Street in Salem.
