Smith, Philip Horton

- Born in Salem in 1890, Philip Horton Smith, a well known architect, graduated from Salem High School and Harvard College.
- After graduation he began working at the Boston architectural firm, Kilham, Hopkins & Greeley. Over the next few years, he worked on a number of Salem projects.
- After he served in the World War I, he returned to Salem.
- His architectural firm was named Smith & Walker.
- He married Elinor Colby Mahoney Smith in 1934 and they had a son in 1939.
- In honor of Salem tercentenary in 1926, he designed the bandstand on Salem Common. He also designed several buildings in the city; the Hawthorne Hotel, the Pequot House (1930), the U. S. Post Office (1932-1933) and the Holyoke Mutual Insurance Company Building on Norman Street (1935-6).
- Smith helped design Salem's Pioneer Village, and also worked on the design and restoration of several North Shore churches including Grace Church, the Tabernacle Church and the parish house at St. Peter's.
