The Federal Theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) made a big impact in Salem in the 1930's.

Salem was chosen as the site of the second season's offerings, and 26 plays were performed at the Empire Theater from 1937-38.

The FTP also included the Negro Theater Project, which employed African American actors, stagehands and playwrights.
