On Fourth of July in 1898, a small excursion steamer Surf City was on a trip to Baker's Island with 60 passengers on board.

It had just left the pier at Salem Willows, when a strong storm suddenly arose, capsizing the steamer near where Dead Horse Beach is today.

Some were saved, but eight persons died in the tragedy.
