The Salem Evening News ran a story on June 8th with the headline "Fans Claim Beatle Lennon and Yoko in Salem Monday." The story goes that he was in Salem (on Essex St.) looking for the place where the witches were hung. A pair of locals spoke to Lennon in his car and said to follow them to Gallows Hill area. There was a motorcade, but as the cars got closer, a group of rowdy teenagers arrived at the scene and Lennon made a hasty retreat. The local pair's names were Mickey Bates (19 yrs. old) and Michael O'Brien (20 yrs. old)
