Old Witch Jail
From Salem Links and Lore
In 1684 a jail in which the persons accused of witchcraft in 1692 were confined, was built at 2 Federal St, on the corner of St. Peter Street. In 1763, that jail was succeeded by a new one, on the site of what is now 4 Federal Street. When the new stone jail was built in 1813, this building was remodeled into a dwelling house. It is said that some timbers of the jail of 1692 were used in the construction of the jail in 1763, according to the Visitor's Guide (1953 ed.)
