The Custom House, built in 1818, is well known with its ties to Nathaniel Hawthorne. He worked there when he lived in Salem.

The previous custom house was at Central Street before moving to Derby Wharf in 1819.

Salem artisan Joseph True carved the Custom House eagle in 1825. In 2003, the eagle was taken down, replace temporarily with a replica while the other was restored over a three year period.
