The USS Virginia was a naval battleship which visited Salem on July 4, 1915.

The ship was invited here by special assignment of Secretary Daniels. The celebration opened with military exercises at Fort Lee, then followed by a parade. Officers of the warship, the band and two or more companies of its men participated in the patriotic parade.

The celebration was two-fold. Not only the 130th anniversary of American Independence, but the centenary of peace between the United States and Great Britain.
