John Prince (171-1836) was a long-time minister at Salem's First Church.

He was also an inventor of an early air-pump, an instrument that could produce the vacuum

needed to study the behavior of gases and liquids. He published his work in the

journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which he was an early member.
