The Salem Gas Light Company was chartered March 11, 1847 and organized April 4, 1850.

The works were originally located on Northey Street, the manufacturing being done there until 1890.

An enlargement and extension became necessary and a removal was made to the easterly side of Bridge Street, near Beverly Bridge.

The gas property included the greater portion of the Pierce & Waite wharf and field. The works overlook Beverly harbor, where the coal supply can be directly delivered to

the sheds.
