Crucible (movie)
From Salem Links and Lore
Based on the classic witch-hunt drama by playwright Arthur Miller, the movie version of the Crucible was produced in 1996 by 20th Century Fox. Arthur Miller wrote the screenplay as well.
A village, recreated as Salem in 1692, was built on Hog (also known as Choate) Island in Essex and much of the movie was shot there, as well as at the United Shoe Machinery plant (the present day Cummings Center) on Elliott Street in Beverly. The lead actors were Daniel Day Lewis, Winona Ryder and Paul Scofield. Many locals were used as extras on the crew.
A 1957 French film was made starring Simone Signoret and Yves Montand, directed by Raymond Rouleau. The film is an adaptation of the 1953 play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller and is spoken in French.
