Based on the classic witch-hunt drama by playwright Arthur Miller, the movie version of the Crucible was produced in 1996 by 20th Century Fox. Arthur Miller also wrote the screenplay. A village, supposed to be Salem in 1692 was built on Hog Island in Essex and much of the movie was shot there, as well as at the United Shoe Machinery plant on Elliott Street in Beverly. The lead actors were Daniel Day Lewis, Winona Ryder and Paul Scofield. Many locals were used as extras on the crew.
