  • The Fountain at East India Square is a stone fountain, designed by John Collins, showing the changes in Salem's topography as the waterfront area was dredged and filled. Stepping-stone cobbles represent the changing land masses. Called "Salem's Gateway to the Far East" the fountain was completed in 1976.
  • In 1993, the fountain's pump was repaired after the fountain stopped working for about a year.

The cost to the city was approximately $15,000.

In spring of 2000, some repairs done to the fountain provoked much debate over whether the structure's aesthetic had been altered.
