Lewis Hine Photographs

Lewis Hine (1874-1940) documented child labor in the United States for the National Child Labor Committee from 1908 to 1924. Some of his photographs show Salem children at various jobs, including the shoe factories and mills so prevalent in town then.

In the fall of 1911, Hine was in New England and documented the industrial workplaces in Boston, Lowell, New Bedford, Lawrence and Salem. These can be found in the Library of Congress website. Click on the links below to view a sampling.
