  • Born in Salem in 1890, Philip Horton Smith graduated from Salem High School and Harvard College.
  • After graduation he began working at the Boston architectural firm, Kilham, Hopkins & Greeley. Over the next few years, he worked on

a number of Salem projects.

  • After he served in the World War I, he returned to Salem.
  • In honor of Salem tercentenary in 1926, he designed the bandstand on Salem Common. He also designed several building in the city in addition to the Hawthorne Hotel,

including the Pequot House (1930), the U. S. Post Office (1932-1933) and the Holyoke Mutual Insurance Company Building on Norman Street (1935-6)
