Charles Wentworth Upham (1802-1875) was mayor of Salem in 1852, and member of the state senate in 1850, 1857 and 1858. He may be best known for his volume on the Salem Witch Trials; Salem Witchcraft, with an Account of Salem Village, published in 1867.
Upham prepared for the ministry at Harvard Divinity School after graduating Harvard College. In 1824 he was ordained as colleague-pastor with the Rev. John Prince at the First Church (Unitarian) in Salem, Mass. An attack of bronchitis in 1844 led him to resign his pastorate at the church, though he stayed active at that church all his life.
