Henry O. Upton, born in North Salem in 1839, was a musician of note and a dance master.

With the exception of eight years in Boston, he spent the bulk of his time in Salem.

At sixteen, he learned the tinsmith's trade.

Having a pleasing tenor voice, he sang in churches and was a member of the Salem Brass band and one of the original members

of the Salem Cadet band. He was appointed teacher of music in the public schools in 1883, and taught for 5 years. He also

composed music. In 1864, he began the study of dancing. He became a popular dance teacher in the area, and taught at Hamilton Hall.
