Read, Nathan
From Salem Links and Lore
Nathan Read (1759-1949) was one of the many 18th century inventors from the North Shore.
He invented a machine that could both cut and head nails. According to Jim McAllister in the Salem News, in 1799, he opened a factory in Danversport to take advantage of that technology.
Read was also a pioneer in the field of steam engines and paddle-wheel boats. The former farmer's son also invented a sophisticated boiler and double-acting steam engine.
