Chase Garden

From Salem Links and Lore

The Chase Garden was in South Salem about where the Saltonstall School on Lafayette Street now stands and ran back to the water. It was laid out by in the

1870's by the owner, George Chase and was noted for its horticultural excellence.

It was once said of this garden, "Mr. Chase's beautiful garden on Lafayette Stree shows the great advantage of reserving open lawn space and planting borders.

It gives the feeling of breadth and size of area, adequately displaying specimen shrubs and trees."

In the volume Old Salem Gardens, Chase Garden is given a nice article, as well as a two page list of plants from the garden, along with almost 50 varieties

of roses. The garden was destroyed in the Salem fire of 1914.
