Congress Street Bridge
In 1995-96 the Congress Street Bridge, built in 1917, was replaced in a $1.4 million project.
The bridge had been deteriorating and was inadequate for modern day traffic needs.
The new bridge will be supported by pilings in the South River. Pile-supported abutments will be
erected behind each of the existing sea walls on the north and south ends of the bridge.
At high tide the new bridge will prove an additional 2 1/2 feet of clearance, allowing small boats to enter the South River.
After nearly a year of construction, Congress St. bridge reopened Oct. 4th 1996, just in time for the Halloween rush.
