Fort Pickering Lighthouse
Fort Pickering (Winter Island) Light was erected in 1871 by the United States Lighthouse Service (which later merged with the Coast Guard). The lens of the lighthouse rises 28 feet above the waterline. The concrete base sits on a ledge, meaning the lighthouse is surrounded by water at half tide or less.
Work was done in 1983 on the lighthouse's crumbling foundation.
More work was done on the lighthouse in 1999, by the American Steeple Corp. They performed iron work repairs, painting and lantern-glass replacement.
