Essex County, of which Salem is part, is the location of 461 properties and districts listed on the National Register,

including 25 National Historic Landmarks. Salem itself is the location of 45 of the properties and districts, including

eight National Historic Landmarks.

The National Historic Landmarks in Salem are: Gardiner-Pingree House, Hamilton Hall, House of the Seven Gables, Peabody Museum of Salem (the East India Marine Hall), Pierce-Nichols House, Joseph Story House, John Ward House (aka The Witch House)
