Frederick Osborne was one of the 2,566 Salem residents known to have served in the Union Army or Navy during the Civil War.

He enlisted in a local company of the Massachusetts 23rd Volunteer Regiment when he was only 16 years old. This regiment included

about 200 Salem men and was part of the Union Army under the command of Gen. Ambrose Burnside. They participated in 13 engagements.

A book of Osborne's letters to his sister and mother from the field was published in 1999. Called "Private Osborne, Massachusetts
