Salem High School's first football team was formed in 1890.

The Beverly/Salem rivalry began in 1891 and continues to this day. The Beverly Panthers and the Salem Witches have played each year at Thanksgiving time. Their Centennial Game was in 1990.

According to "100 Years of Salem High Football" :

  • Most rushing yards in one game was by Roy Breckenridge (240 yds) against Saugus in 1987.
  • Most passes caught in one game was by Steve Sadoski vs. Gloucester (9 passes)in 1988.
  • Most passes caught in one season was Steve Pinto in 1974. (39 passes)
  • Most touchdown passes thrown in one game was by Rusty Goodick in 1965 (5 passes)

(Some of these records may have been surpassed since the volume was compiled in 1990.)

Five outstanding players were highlighted by the Salem News in 2014. Called the Fantastic Five they were:

  • Wayne Millner - End (1926-28)
  • Mike Giardi - Quarterback (1987-89)
  • Malikke Van Alstyne - Tailback Defensive Back (2006-08)
  • Matt Horgan - Running Back/Linebacker (1979-99)
  • Don Sadoski - Running Back (1961-63)
