WESX
WESX radio, a small AM station, began broadcasting in Salem in 1939 and was located in the Peabody Building on Washington Street. In 1952, James Asher bought the station from original owner Charlie Phelan and moved it to Marblehead, next to the station's transmitter on Naugus Head.
Some of their popular on-air radio personalities were Al Needham and Norm Durkee and Betty Stavis.
Sports was a big part of the station's identity. Sometimes five high school football games a weekend. They would do hockey and basketball games in the winter and Little League baseball games in the summer.
Due to the changing industry, WESX was sold in 1986 to a Connecticut businessman who planned to take down the antenna and move the studio to Chelsea, maybe even changing the call letters.
